      I lived on Seal Place during the time this blog focuses on, and numerous individuals from the neighborhood participated in the scene as well. Its central location was in proximity to many of the events. (Also, it was very difficult to find a Blogspot name that hadn't already been taken!) Thank you for reading.

      1972 > 1975: J.J. Cale, Linda Rhondsadt, Taj Mahall, Cheech & Chong, Doc & Merle Watson, Goose Creek, Nitty Gritty, Eric Quincy Tate (once housed in an apartment just below them), New Riders of the Purple Sage, Linghtn' Hopkins(ran into him at Towers Liquor Store on Piedmont on the way to show). What an awesome concept and new venue! I think a bucket of beer was $1.50 and 75 cents for a refill. I had moved to Atlanta two weeks out of high school from Birmingham. Jesus, those were the days. Many times we wound up 27 Birds for late night breakfast. Also frequented Everybody's Pizza near Emory. Myself and four friends sat there one night and drank 12 pitchers of beer. The 13th was on the house because they said it was a house record! Holy shit! Just to be that young again.

      About the opening;

      Hi - just a small correction - I opened for Jonathan Edwards on the official opening night and week of the GSEMH that you have him listed solo. I did the opening party and that first week - I was really on my way out of Atlanta preparing to leave at the end of August I think. Robin Conant booked me as I recall. I came back a couple of times working with The Earl Scruggs Revue and Paul Davis. Gary Scruggs and Randy Scruggs both figured in my songwriting career - I wrote quite a few with Gary and Randy produced my first Nashville hit on a Canadian artist named John Allen Cameron. Thanks for this amazing archive of info.

      Now I'll correct myself - It was August 1973 that I left Atlanta (not 1972) and I returned in 1974 when I got booked to open for Paul Davis and Pyramid. That was the last time I played in Atlanta until I played Eddie's Attic in 1994. As a footnote - Paul Davis and I were both inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame - one of those sweet coincidences that you can't make up - nice to visit these old memories.

      Wow, great memories. I lived in Atlanta from 1969-1977 and the music scene in those days had to be experienced to be believed. Without a large venue until the Omni was built, it seemed a lot of artists avoided the city for lack of a place to play that they considered appropriate for their "fame" (for example, the Stones skipped us in 1972 to play in Tuscaloosa of all places - did not play Atlanta until 1975 when the Omni was available). That being said, Atlanta was becoming the hub of the South and many artists did stop by to play in such small venues as the GSEMH, Richards, and the Electric Ballroom...as well as the Fox Theatre and the timeless Municipal Auditorium. I saved all my ticket stubs and now, in retirement, am putting together a binder of memories for my offspring. This blog has been very helpful in pinning down exact dates since the GSEMH tix usually just had the artist and day of the week - many thanks for putting it together. In any event, I had some of the best nights of my life there at Broadview Plaza - I especially remember making out with my date on the floor during a break only to look up to see Delbert McClinton admiring my technique (or more likely the hot blonde I was wrestling with). Tom Waits opening for Robert Klein in Nov 1974 was an eye-opener to say the least...Phil Ochs and Jim Croce shortly before they died...The Incredible String Band...Fairport Convention...Roger McGuinn...Leo Kottke...Doug Kershaw...Jerry Garcia & the Legion of Mary...Tom Rush...Leonard Cohen...Jimmy Buffet...the Steve Martin Mull Review...Donovan...the Flying Burrito Brothers...Dion...Leo Sayer...Shawn Phillips...the Amazing Kreskin...Iam Matthews...Jesse Colin Young...New Riders of the Purple Sage...Hot Tuna...Arlo Guthrie...you can't buy memories like that - just glad I have them.
