Yikes, big congrats on compiling this list. Robin Feld wasn't the founder, there was at least one earlier man involved with its beginning. Then Robin and Joe Roman took it over. Robin was probably a college freshman at the time. After her freshman year she stayed in Atlanta to tun the club, many years later marrying Paul McCandless of the band Oregon, settling in NYC and then Bolinas, CA where she died.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this. What history I gathered online had her working together with the church in the beginning. From what I read, Joe came in a bit later to co-manage with her, but you would know better if you knew them all firsthand. I just came across this link to her personal history. Robin Feld was an amazing woman, taken way too soon. http://www.coastalpost.com/05/01/10.htm
ReplyDeleteRobin co-ran/owned it with the amazing, charismatic Ursula Alexander for many years...Ursula later managed the Great Southeast Music Hall, then got involved with moviemaking in GA, moved to Hollywood, was a producer for Dynasty...now divides her time between NY and Charleston.
ReplyDeleteOriginally the 12th Gate was a Methodist Youth Fellowship inner-city outreach post - a volunteer run coffee house started by Rev. Bruce Donnely - Robin Feld very well may have been there in the beginning. I was raised in the Methodist church and went there initially because they had folk music and it was a friendly place for a small town kid going to GA Tech.
ReplyDeleteLater Robin Feld along with Joe Roman turned it into the hip Venue it became drawing local and National Talent and eventually serving beer as well as coffee. Ursula Alexander also was one of the key people working there and I believe she was responsible for getting acts like Little Feat to play there.
I played there quite a bit - Carter Tomassi was the most artful of all the local photographers. There is an iconic long-haired photo of me sitting on the front porch of the Gate on his website. Gus Kauffman wrote for the Great Speckled Bird among others and wrote a review of my last performance there before I moved to Woodtock, New York on my long journey into show business.
I remember that shot of you at the Gate. Carter also took a classic shot of JP in the Kin-Tel Studios when we were recording. JP, Mat and I are getting together to play two concerts on Orcas Island April 1-2. Looks like the last date we played at the 12th Gate as Milkweed was May 1972.
DeleteHey Pat! Just discovered this page, and it was great seeing your post. I was living in ATL when you were playing at 12th Gate, then I too moved to Woodstock. Fond memories of great music and great friends! All the best! Dave Perkins
DeleteI'm so glad you found your way to this site, and congratulations to you on all the success you've achieved in the years since the 12th Gate. Your added insight is very much appreciated. I agree, too, that Carter Tomassi's photos (www.messyoptics.com) are at the top of the list in capturing the era in ATL back then. Such a time....
ReplyDeleteWow! What a source. Where on Earth did you acquire this treasure. Might I put a link on The Strip Project?
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful time in Atlanta and the positive vibes at the 12th Gate.Thank you Ursala for resurrecting this blog!I had no idea how the Gate met its demise.I enjoyed my time living and working with "Milkweed".Ursala you are one of a kind!
