Support Southern Music

In the early 1970s, Capricorn Records founder Phil Walden created the simply-designed "Support Southern Music" promotional button. It purposefully read "Music," not "Rock," to extend inclusion to all styles, although "Southern Rock" would emerge as the catchphrase describing the burgeoning music genre of that period. The button served as a wink and a nod amongst Southern music insiders and supporters with belief that something of epic proportion was happening, beginning with the success of the Allman Brothers Band.

  1. Moe Slotin created that button, he had maybe 50 or 100 made and gave them to friends, some in the music business. He was pretty proud that it became a collectors item.

  2. I read this online in the August 1999 Augusta Chronicle:

Capricorn Records founder Phil Walden is not "particularly crazy" about the term "Southern rocker," according to the book [Southern Rockers: The Roots and Legacy of Southern Rock, by Marley Brant]. He believes it developed from Capricorn promotional buttons that read, "Support Southern Music." He notes they did not say, "Support Southern Rock Music."

I wouldn't be surprised if the button originated with Moe, and then Capricorn took it from there. I'm most definitely proud to have gotten mine from him.

BTW, may I say that your photography is a treasure and valuable archive of that time in our history. I've been diligent about giving you credit and mentioning your site. I am so thankful you captured all those moments.
